Winter Travel Season
Our Travel Basketball program offers a more competitive experience for boys and girls in grades 4–8 who are ready to take their game to the next level. We compete in the JBL (Jersey Basketball League) and play other towns throughout the state of NJ.
This program emphasizes advanced skill development, teamwork, and game strategy, with a higher level of commitment and competition than our recreational league. Participation is based on performance at tryouts, and team spots are limited.
If your child is passionate about basketball and eager to grow in a competitive environment, the Mt. Olive Travel Program may be a great fit!
Ages
Mt Olive Travel programs are available to Boys and Girls, Grades 4th through 8th.
When
Practices begin mid-end of November. Game begin first week of December and playoffs run through mid-March.
Where
Travel team practices held at Mt. Olive Elementary schools and Middle School.
Home games are held either at CMS or MOMS, while away games are based on who is in your Division that year.
Divisions
The JBL has Gold, Silver and Bronze Divisions that each team will be selected to participate in the beginning of the season. Selection is based on prior year performance and anticipated skill level for the current season.
Games
The schedule typically consists of approximately 15 games during the regular season. If the team makes playoffs (which is based off of their record during the season), teams play until they lose (up to an additional 4-5 games).
Jerseys
Jerseys will be provided to those who have been selected to a Travel team. Jerseys include home and away shirt and shorts, shooting shirt and Mt Olive basketball bag (if desired).

1. What is the Travel Basketball Program?

2. How is Travel different from the Recreational Program?
Travel basketball involves a higher level of competition, more structured practices, and a greater time commitment. Players are expected to demonstrate strong skills, effort, and teamwork.
3. Are tryouts required?
Yes. All players must attend tryouts to be considered for a Travel team. Team placement is based on performance, attitude, and coach evaluations. Evaluations/ratings are gathered after tryouts to determine the final roster by team.
4. How many teams are formed each season?
The number of teams depends on interest, skill level, and availability of volunteer coaches. Not all age groups are guaranteed to have a Travel team. Multiple teams at the same level will be created if all requirements are met.
5. What is the time commitment?
Travel teams typically practice 2–3 times per week and play weekly games, including most weekends. Additionally, 2 tournaments may be scheduled throughout the season.
6. Where are games played?
Games are played locally and throughout New Jersey as part of the JBL schedule. Home games are held in Mt. Olive gyms when available.
7. What are the costs involved?
Travel basketball includes additional fees for uniforms, league registration, and potential tournament costs. Fee details will be provided during registration.
8. Can my child play both Recreational and Travel basketball?
In some cases, yes—especially for younger age groups. However, we ask that the travel team commitments take priority and may conflict with Rec schedules.
9. What if my child doesn’t make a Travel team?
We encourage all players to participate in our Recreational Program, which offers great development opportunities and fun competition.
